Mishaka Pond
Mishaka Pond is known as the inspiriation for Midori Hibiku (Green Echoes), a work by the famous Japanese painter Kaii Higashiyama. The pond is located in the mountains at an elevation of 1,500m, and the spot is visited by numerous tourists and photographers due to the beautiful sight of the background landscape reflected on the water surface.
The Japanese larches growing in the vicinity change color through the seasons, and visitors can enjoy landscapes of fresh green in spring, deep green in summer, golden hues in autumn, and snow and ice in winter.
The best time of day is in the early morning when there is no wind, the air is calm, and the sun is still low in the sky.
We also recommend stopping by Oshidori Kakushi Falls, a waterfall about a 10-min walk from Mishaka Pond. Colonies of chatsubomi moss grow in the acidic water, and in autumn, the contrast between the moss and the reddish leaves is another highlight.
We recommend enjoying the hot spring at Yama no Yado Meiji Onsen, a hot spring spa located right next to Oshidori Kakushi Falls. The falls can be viewed from the spa and day-trip bathing is also available, so visitors can casually enjoy the hot spring spa.
